What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused primarily by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi (and related species). It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks (also called deer ticks).
Common signs and symptoms
Early (3–30 days after bite): erythema migrans (a round or bull’s-eye rash in some cases), fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches, swollen lymph nodes.
Later stages (weeks to months if untreated): severe joint pain and swelling (often knees), neurological problems (facial palsy, numbness, tingling, meningitis-like symptoms), heart rhythm irregularities, cognitive difficulties.
