Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited blood disorder caused by a mutation in the HBB gene that produces abnormal hemoglobin S (HbS). Red blood cells containing HbS can deform into a rigid, sickle-like shape, especially under low-oxygen conditions. These sickled cells are less flexible, leading to hemolysis (shortened red cell lifespan) and vaso-occlusion (blockage of small blood vessels). The result is chronic anemia, episodic pain crises, and damage to multiple organs.
