What is lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and blood cells.
The most common type is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Other forms include cutaneous lupus (skin), drug-induced lupus, and neonatal lupus.
Signs and symptoms
Fatigue and persistent tiredness
Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
Skin rashes, including the classic “butterfly” rash across the cheeks and nose
Fever without known cause
Photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight)
Hair loss
