Ovarian cancer arises from cells of the ovary, fallopian tube, or peritoneum. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women and the most lethal gynecologic malignancy because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Types include epithelial ovarian cancer (most common), germ cell tumors, and sex cord–stromal tumors.
